Ford Sponsors the London Mardi Gras

LONDON, June 19, 2001 -- Ford Motor Company is to be a main sponsor at the London Mardi Gras on 30 June, Europe's largest Gay and Lesbian Pride event and one of the capital's most fun, lively and colourful community festivals. This will be the second year that Ford has been involved with the London Mardi Gras.

Members of Ford's own Gay, Lesbian or Bisexual Employee group, GLOBE, will also be attending the Mardi Gras in force.

This year, the extensive Ford stand will host exciting motor racing simulators, the latest craze dance machines and a variety of Ford vehicles on display. A large format screen will be taking a live feed from the main stage where acts such as Steps, 5ive, A1, Atomic Kitten and many more will be performing for the expected 85,000 party-goers.

Ford has also gifted a Ford Ka Collection to the Terrence Higgins Trust Lighthouse (THTL) for a raffle prize, with all proceeds going to the charity. Raffle tickets for the Ford Ka draw are already available through THTL and will also be sold on the day from the Ford stand by the THTL. While the racing simulators and dance machines will be free, donations to THTL will be requested. The lucky winner will be drawn on the day by one of the big name stars attending the Mardi Gras.

Six Ford Galaxys are being provided at Mardi Gras to transport the star performers to and from the main stage. Ford has already loaned a Ford Ka and a Ford Explorer to the Mardi Gras organisers to help publicise the festival.

Ford's own Gay, Lesbian or Bisexual Employee group, GLOBE, will also be attending the Mardi Gras in force. Approximately 50 Ford employees from Britain and Germany, plus friends, some travelling in the Ford GLOBE Ka and Maverick, are parading in the Pride March and Parade, and will be giving away Ford merchandise both during the march and at the Mardi Gras.

"Ford has been supporting gay, lesbian and transgender events and charities for many years, and this year, Ford will be a main sponsor of the London Mardi Gras," said Ian McAllister, CBE, chairman and managing director, Ford Motor Company Limited.

"We believe at Ford in helping to foster a global society that is more open and tolerant, and one that values diversity. Our presence at the Mardi Gras underlines that philosophy."

The London Mardi Gras takes place at Finsbury Park, London on Saturday, 30 June, 2001. The Pride March and Parade starts at Hyde Park at 12 noon and winds through central London to Victoria.
